Tusculum College names Dr. Nancy Moody as new President

Tusculum College, my alma mater, has found a new president. The College named Dr. Nancy Moody, current president of Lincoln Memorial University, as the 27th President on Saturday, February 28.

Moody expects to leave LMU on April, and will be on the job at Tusculum by June 1.

Having been a member of the Presidential Search Committee during my tenure as a student at TC, I am extremely pleased and excited that the College has chosen such an esteemed and qualified leader to take the helms. I must also take the time to praise the excellent work and leadership of Dr. Russell Nichols, who has been serving as Interim President since June 2007. I was proud to serve on the committee that brought Dr. Nichols to Tusculum, and am even prouder now that he has succeeded in the job.

So, to my former committee members, I say, a job well done!

GCDWC Meeting on April 17

The April Meeting of the Greene County Democratic Women's Club will meet on Thursday, April 17 at 6PM at the Andrew Johnson Clubhouse. Everyone is invited!

Menu: Fancy Mixed Garden Salad with Dressing, Rolls and Butter, Chicken Mushroom Penne Pasta with Broccoli and dessert will be Lemon Cake. Coffee and iced tea will also be served. Dinner is $12.50 with reservations, $15 at the door.

The program will be an environmental discussion about the waters of the Nolichuckey River. Panelists will be Paul Hayden (Greene County Soil Conservation District) and Frances Lamberts (Legislative Chairman of the TN League of Women Voters.) The moderator will be Wilhelmina C. Williams, President of the Middle Nolichuckey Watershed Alliance.

Rep. Eddie Yokley Passes Pro-Environment Bill

Rep. Eddie Yokley (D-Greeneville) advanced a proposal to standardize testing the waters flowing through Tennessee’s borders from neighboring Haywood County, North Carolina. The bill is one of the legislator’s several pro-environment and conservation bills to move forward regarding East Tennessee’s Pigeon River.

From the House Caucus:

On Wednesday, House Bill 3482, a bill to establish standards for drawing water samples out of the Pigeon River, passed out of the House Conservation & Environment Committee.

“The pollution problems of the Pigeon River are too important for Tennesseans to be sitting on the sidelines,” said Representative Eddie Yokley (D-Greenville) who is sponsoring the legislation. “This bill will allow us to set specific standards in how we test the water so that we can have definitive, researched evidence of the contamination we’re seeing in our river”

House Bill 3482 would require, under the Water Quality Control Act, that any water sample drawn to test the quality of the Pigeon River be drawn within one quarter mile of the border separating Tennessee and North Carolina, in the center of the river. A water sample drawn from the river must meet both the apparent and true color standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency and be evaluated against Tennessee water quality standards.

“We know there are entities outside the borders of our state that are directly impacting the water flowing into Tennessee,” Yokley said. “Thanks to this bill, we can start building an accurate database of the issues going on in the Pigeon and isolate the culprit.”

Politics1 had an interesting chat over the weekend with a well-placed source who has been serving as a senior McCain advisor during the primary campaign. For reasons that will be clear, you'll see why he didn't want to be named. The topic: possible GOP Vice Presidential runningmates. "My advice is to pick a safe choice, someone who won't do any political damage," he said, "but I don't think that is entirely where it's heading. Everytime I look at the names, I think the choice is going to be [Florida Governor] Charlie Crist. I mean, just look at the other guys [being mentioned] and they're just so underwhelming that it leads back to Charlie by elimination. Mitt Romney isn't going to happen. Huckabee may end up in the Cabinet, but won't be the runningmate. [Minnesota Governor Tim] Pawlenty has a great story, coming from blue collar roots, but he couldn't deliver Minnesota Republicans, so how is Pawlenty going to do anything for McCain in the general? [South Carolina Governor] Mark Sanford would probably be my first choice, as he's a very safe pick. But Sanford doesn't add anything that McCain doesn't already have." What about former Ohio Congressman Rob Portman, who served as President Bush's Budget Director? "Give me a fucking break: Portman has a zero percent chance of being on the ticket. He'd be a terrible choice." What about the rumors that McCain wants Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) as his runningmate? "Absolutely true. Joe Lieberman would be McCain's top choice if he could pick the person he really wants as a runningmate. It would be a bold pick, the kind of choice that would have the potential to remake modern American politics into something new. It would guarantee McCain a landslide win in November -- and, mark my words, McCain won't have the guts to do it. He'd really like to pick Lieberman, but in the end he'll cave to those who want a more traditional choice. That's why I say it falls back to Charlie Crist as the runningmate." Why Crist more than one of the other names? "Crist's endorsement, when Romney was flying up McCain's ass in the polls, and possibly had passed him in Florida in that last weekend, was the single turning point that made McCain the nominee. But for Charlie Crist, McCain would not be our nominee." What about the rumors that Crist is gay or too much of a centrist? "Who cares what he stands for because he delivered for McCain in the primary. Charlie would put Florida safely in the Republican column in November. As to the gay rumors, that's just a lot of insider stuff. Most Americans -- and most Floridians -- have never heard the rumors and really don't want to hear the rumors. Charlie says he isn't gay, nobody has proven otherwise, and the public will accept him at his word ... I have no idea if he is or isn't, but the public just doesn't want to hear this stuff."

Since the last post, quite a few things have happened. Let's get started.....

Not only has Mike Padgett announced his candidacy, but Nashville attorney and former party chair Bob Tuke also announced he will run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Both men are very well liked in their respective areas, so this should prove an interesting primary. The men are fighting for the right to face Senator Lamar Alexander. Rob Russell, Director of the Writing Center at ETSU and musician, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Congress in Tennessee's First Congressional District. Rob is seeking the seat currently held by freshman Congressman David Davis, who also happens to find himself in a tough primary battle against Johnson City Mayor Dr. Phil Roe. Rob has held a couple of petition signing events in the Upper East Tennessee area and has been making the rounds to the Democratic Women's Clubs of the 1st district. Casey Nicholson, a Greeneville native, has announced his candidacy for the State House of Representatives for the 5th district. This district encompasses half of Greene County and all of Unicoi County. The seat is currently held by Rep. David Hawk, a Republican from Greeneville.

Casey is the son of a single mother who taught at Highland Elementary School for thirty-eight years. Casey's father was a blue collar auto technician who lived in Greene County most of his life and passed away in 2002. Casey is a graduate of Greeneville High School, Walters State Community College, East Tennessee State University, and Memphis Theological Seminary. He earned honors credentials in all of his post-high school degrees.

Casey is an ordained minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where he is studying Religion & Politics.

BREAKING: Former Knox County Clerk, Mike Padgett, to challenge Alexander

Mike Padgett says he's running!

Former Knox County Clerk Mike Padgett said today that he will seek the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

"I'm running. Period," Padgett said in an interview. "I think Tennesseans are ready for a choice and a change."

Padgett said he will make a formal announcement on March 4, his birthday. He will be 59.

Padgett said he believes that an East Tennessee Democrat has the best chance of defeating Alexander.

Some other Democrats - including Mike McWherter, son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, and former state Democratic Chairman Bob Tuke - once indicated an interest in the Senate seat but decided against running.

Padgett was ousted in January 2007 after 20 years as county clerk when the state Supreme Court upheld the county charter and its term limits provision, forcing out officeholders who had served more than two consecutive terms.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, is the day that the MEDIC Bloodmobile will visit the Tusculum
College campus (Niswonger Commons) in this year's Blood Drive Bowl competition with Carson-Newman College.
Collection hours Tuesday are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Blood may also be donated today toward the competition through a blood collection
under way at the Greeneville K-Mart store from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wal-Mart will be
the site for a similar blood collection on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Thursday, the Bloodmobile will visit the Morristown Tusculum College site (420
West Morris) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All donors will receive a tee-shirt, exemption from blood supplier processing fees
at all US hospitals for themselves and their IRS dependents for a year after the
donation, and the satisfaction of helping Tusculum College collect more blood than
our rival Carson-Newman. Refreshments for donors are being provided at all sites
by MEDIC.

The winner of the Blood Drive Bowl will be announced Saturday at halftime of the
TC/Carson-Newman football game, to kicked off at Carson-Newman at 1 p.m.

Tusculum personnel in the Knoxville area may donate to the Blood Drive Bowl through
this week at the MEDIC headquarters at 1601 Ailor Avenue between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30
p.m. weekdays.

Thanks for your support of Tusculum College in the Blood Drive Bowl, and in
particular, your support of MEDIC as it seeks to meet our region's blood needs.

A negative, O positive and O negative blood types are especially needed at present,
MEDIC is reporting.

Because of the way blood is separated and used, one donation can save up to three
lives.

Here we go.....

It's 2007, over a year away from the Presidential elections, and Lincoln Davis has already declared he's running for Governor in 2010. News is HFJ is also interested.

Now, I like both Davis and HFJ, so this one could be a toss-up for me. HFJ obviously has higher name recognition, so I would think he would be the clear front-runner. But, Davis does have quite a large district.

Maybe it's just me.....but isn't all this a just bit premature? Oh well, it should be interesting, nonetheless.

A few days late, I know....

Democrat Mike McWherter, son of former governor Ned McWherter, says he’s forming an exploratory committee to consider a run for the Senate next year.

McWherter, a Jackson businessman, says he will travel the state in the next weeks to meet with potential supporters and voters.

The incumbent is Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Republican, who was elected in 2002. Alexander was previously a two-term governor, U.S. education secretary, a university president and a two-time presidential candidate.

McWherter, 51, practiced law in Nashville until his father was elected governor in 1986, and then moved to Jackson to run his family’s beer distribution business.

Ned McWherter served two terms as governor and was previously speaker of the Tennessee House for 14 years.

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats (TFCD) held its annual spring conference Saturday in Nashville to provide chapter development training and to elect the organization’s executive board.

“The conference this year was a great success,” said Alex Youn, outgoing TFCD president. “We were able to get a lot of participation from schools that haven’t been active before. That’s something we’ve done really well the past two years, we’ve managed to grow all our existing chapters and start new ones as well.”

Greetings My Fellow Democrats!

There are many exciting things going on!

For one, Democrats elected the first woman in U.S. History to become Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nancy Pelosi!

Secondly, our new Democratic-controlled Congress is moving forward with groundbreaking legislation to benefit the American people.

In the first 100 hours of the 110th Congress:

Democrats started by cleaning up Congress, breaking the link between lobbyists and legislation and commited to pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending.

Democrats made our nation safer and began by implementing the recommendations of the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

Democrats made our economy fairer, and we began by raising the minimum wage.

Democrats made health care more affordable for all Americans, and began by fixing the Medicare prescription drug program, putting seniors first by negotiating lower drug prices.

Democrats promoted stem cell research to offer real hope to the millions of American families who suffer from devastating diseases.

Democrats broadened college opportunity, and began by cutting interest rates for student loans in half.

Democrats energized America by working towards achieving energy independence, and we we began by rolling back the multi-billion dollar subsidies for Big Oil.

CDA is hosting a Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. from February 1-4. There will be a large delegation from Tennessee attending.

Also, the CDA Women's Caucus has undertaken an HPV awareness project. There will be information regarding this important project forthcoming in the near future.

CDA also announced on January 28 that it's 2007 National Convention will be held in South Carolina at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Tennessee also came home with the title College Democrats of America's State Federation of the Year.

TFCD Membership Director & TC Democrats President Landree Brotherton attended the 2006 convention in St. Louis, and had this to say, "The CDA National Convention was beyond all comprehension. College Dems from all across the United States converged on St. Louis and took the city by storm. We had the chance to meet and mingle with stars from the Democratic Party, including DNC chairman Dr. Howard Dean, General Wesley Clark, Iowa Governor and now Presidential Candidate Tom Vilsack, and the current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. We also elected new leadership for the CDA, and they have been doing an outstanding job. Tennessee was especially proud to come home with the CDA's State Federation of the Year honors. The convention was amazing, and I encourage everyone who has the oppurtunity to attend. You won't regret it!"

The TC College Democrats submitted a budget to the SGA, attended the meetings, and is awaiting an announcement from the SGA regarding funds for the semester. Upon recieving these funds, the TC Dems hope to begin a letter writing campaign to local, state, and national elected officials. More info will be provided later. Also, elections for the upcoming school year will take place shortly!

“It is a great honor to serve as President of the TFCD for another year,” Holden said. “This organization has come a long way since the spring of 2005 and we have big plans for the coming months.”

My name is John Cage. You may or may not know me, but please allow me to introduce myself. I am a sophomore English Education major. I am from Murfreesboro, Tennessee where I have two parents who have been married for 17 years, two little brothers and two little sisters. I am very much a family person. In being a family person, I am also a people person, which led me to my position as an RA in Katherine, as well as the position of Vice President of the Tusculum College Democrats.

As Vice President of the Tusculum College Democrats, I would like to extend an invitation to you for our next meeting on Monday, March 20, at 4 PM in Niswonger 401. We have many items to discuss, among them Harold Ford Jr.’s senate race, our upcoming voter registration drive, and the nominating petition for the incumbent governor Phil Bredesen.

Midterm elections are this November, and we would love to have you help us ensure that the Democrats maintain control of the state house and regain control of the senate, as well as begin working toward regaining control of the national house and senate.

Remember, the Democrats are the party who got women the right to vote. Democrats got African Americans the right to vote. Democrats created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Democrats ended segregation. Democrats passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Democrats created Medicare. Democrats passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.

And what did Republicans do? They opposed all of these landmark movements that made life the way it is today.

At the state level today, Democrats are working toward raising the minimum wage and ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work.

Once again, Republicans are opposing this movement for economic equality.

Now is not the time to be ashamed of what you believe. Please join us on Monday the 20th, and help us ensure that the ideals that our grandparents fought for do not die in our generation.

TFCD Conference a Success!

The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats Spring Conference held at the Hotel Preston in Nashville was a raging success. TC's own Landree Brotherton was elected as Membership Director on the state's Executive Board.

Those in attendance heard from many notable people such as State Party Chairman Bob Tuke, State House Maj. Leader Rep. Kim McMillan, John Rowley of Fletcher Rowley & Chao, and Dave "Mudcat" Saunders.

There were around 60 College Democrats in attendance, representing such colleges as UTK, UTC, Maryville, Tusculum, King, Belmont, and MTSU.

TFCD Conference this weekend!

TC Dems President Landree Brotherton & VP John Cage will be traveling to Nashville this weekend to participate in the Tennessee Federation of College Democrats Spring Conference. There will be several notable people in attendance, including U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, State Rep. Kim McMillian, and Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, a Democratic Stratigest.

There will also be a training session with leaders from the DNC, the Democratic National Committee. The duo will depart Tusculum on Friday and return on Sunday!

TFCD Statement on Ethics Reforms

Nashville - The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats recognizes that America is at a very important point in our history. Politicians who abuse the sacred trust of the American people have become so prevalent and their greed has reached such depths that it can no longer be swept under the rug. Our federal and state governments are both in the middle of re-writing laws that have been shredded by greed. We must all insist that strict ethics laws are enacted by both our federal and state representatives.

The time is now to fix the problem.

The Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives has been convicted four times of ethics violations, and is under indictment for money laundering; the Majority Leader in the Senate, one of our Senators, is under investigation, both criminally and civilly; and for the first time in 135 years someone working in the White House has been indicted. Here at home in Tennessee, long-trusted elected officials sold our trust for a few thousand dollars.

This has to end.

“We believe that ethics reforms should be of highest standards,” said Christy Holden, TFCD President. “Democrats are committed to making government once again open and honest.”

Democrats in Congress have proposed a plan to end business as usual in the nation’s capital. With their “Honest Leadership, Open Government” Act, Democrats pledge to:

Fix the gift and travel rules that allowed the Jack Abramoffs of the world to buy Republican influence in Congress,
Increase transparency and accountability in government,
Allow the public to see exactly what their elected representatives are doing in Washington , and
Close the revolving door between government and K Street lobbying firms.

“We will expose the deepest roots of the culture of corruption that has so pervasively strangled the Senate and House, and give the American people a government they can at last respect, because it will be a government that respects them,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY). “And my friends, together America can do better, because America is better. We’re going to take our country back. And we throw the gauntlet down today.”

Statement on Alito’s True Identity

An interesting game known as the Samuel Alito confirmation hearings began in Washington this week. The game will provide the American public with enough misleading quotes by conservative senators to fill up Scott McClellan’s press room. In yesterday’s kickoff, we heard from various conservatives who spun myths about the type of nominee they would like to have and would like the American public to think they have. It may be true that Alito maintains the credibility that nominee Meirs lacked, but he is a conservative – one who could prove to be more conservative than Justice Scalia and one with the ability to do serious damage to Roe v. Wade. So don’t let your local senators fool you – Mr. Alito is no moderate.

Despite conservative senators’ claims, Alito has a history of legislating from the bench. Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Charles Grassley (R-IA) both praised Alito for showing judicial restraint throughout his career, but his record proves otherwise. While on the bench, Alito has stepped over judicial boundaries and overturned existing laws. He has been described as “an activist conservative judge” and even Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) admitted that Alito “was legislating” in the case of U.S. v. Rybar.

Despite conservative senators’ claims, Alito has allowed his personal views to influence his work. Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) claimed Alito never allowed his work to “influence political ends.” In reality, since Alito belonged to the right-wing Concerned Alumni of Princeton group, his politics have influenced his work. While applying for a job in the Reagan administration, Alito said that “the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion” and while in the Solicitor General’s office, he was able to “help advance legal positions in which [he] personally believe[s] very strongly.” These were his personal views and not those of his employer.

Despite Alito’s own claim, his decisions have all followed a conservative bent. Alito said yesterday that he was taught to decide every case on an individual basis. However, a review of all the cases Alito has heard shows that Alito’s 41 dissents as an appeals court judge “are almost uniformly conservative.” In addition, in a majority of cases, Alito urged a more conservative position than his colleagues. Throughout his tenure on the 3rd Circuit, Alito has seldom sided against conservative interests.

Dirty Money Once Again Linked to Republican Candidates

State Represenative Sally Love, candiate for House District 22 released the following statement today asking for her challenger, Eric Watson, to return dirty money, showing opponent cannot be trusted to fight for our families.

(Ocoee) – State Representative Sally Love (D – Polk County) today challenged her opponent, Eric Watson, to return $12,000 in campaign contributions he received from Political Action Committees (PACs) with ties to John and Joseph Gregory and King Pharmaceuticals.

“This raises serious questions about Eric’s loyalty. How can he fight for lower prescription drug costs and more affordable health care when he is clearly bought and paid for by the drug companies,” said Representative Love. “I challenge Eric to return these contributions immediately.”

According to the most recent campaign disclosure filings, Watson received contributions from Tennessee Conservative PAC, Volunteer PAC, and Target PAC. In 2005, these PACs along with the State Republican Party have received approximately $895,000 in contributions from John and Joseph Gregory.

“My opponent has chosen raw ambition over what is right and truthful,” said Love. “I am the only candidate in this race who will fight for our seniors and our families. Clearly, Eric cannot be trusted.”

King Pharmaceuticals was the subject of an SEC investigation for over-inflating its stock value and was recently assessed $1.25 million in fines for Medicaid fraud.

Special Election: Let’s Show’em Some Love

The Background:

For those of you that may not remember, State Representative Chris Newton, a Republican, was indicted in the Tennessee Waltz Scandal. Newton resigned from his seat shortly after his indictment. The Polk County Commission appointed Sally Love, a Democrat, to fill the vacancy until a special election could be held. Since her appointment, Sally Love has done an excellent job representing the people of Bradley, Meigs, and Polk Counties.

Governor Bredesen has decided that Thursday, January 12th will be the date of the special election.

The Plan: Put Some Love Back In the House:

The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats is offering its support to help the Sally Love campaign turn this Republican seat into a permanent Democratic seat. Now, I know what you are thinking, “I am on Christmas break and the last thing that I want to worry about is helping someone out I know nothing about. After all, I just got done with those exams and need a break.”

Well, here our response: If Sally does not win this race, the Republicans will have set the tone leading up to the 2006 elections. We can’t let this happen.

What You Can Do:

Here is where we need your help:

On January 12th, the Sally Love campaign needs drivers and walkers to cover the entire district.
The campaign is paying $50 per walker and $75 per driver with $20 extra for gas if you are out of the Chattanooga area. If you want to get paid, you must be there the ENTIRE day from 7:00AM to 8:30PM.
Up until and on January 12th, the Sally Love campaign will need help doing phone banking. If your chapter is unable to make the trip, but has the capacity to phone bank, Sally needs your help!

Electing Democrats is the most important function of the College Democrats. It is imperative you and your chapter help out in some way; please contact any member of the TFCD to find out how you can help!

TFCD Holds Successful 2005 Fall Summit

Nashville – On Saturday, November 12th, 2006, student leaders from across the state assembled in Nashville for the 2005 Fall Summit of the Tennessee Federation of College Democrats. The Summit was successful in helping to organize chapters and in the development of the TFCD’s statewide strategy for the upcoming 2006 elections.

“The College Democrats are making unbelievable headway across the state’s campuses, showing that the Democratic Party is working for students now more than ever,” said Bob Tuke, TNDP Party Chairman. “College students know that the Democratic Party put the HOPE Scholarship on the table, making college a reality for many young Tennesseans.”

The Summit was held at the Tennessee Democratic Party Headquarters in Nashville, where more than 50 college students were present, representing over 14 colleges and universities from across the state. Tennessee Federation of College Democrats to hold 2005 Fall Summit

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats would like to announce plans to hold its 2005 Fall Summit in Nashville on November 12th. The purpose of the summit is to organize chapters and develop a statewide strategy for turning out college students in the 2006 elections.

“The TFCD is in an ideal stage to begin working with chapters all across our state and to develop our statewide strategy for turning out college students in the upcoming elections,” said Alex Youn, Vice President of the Tennessee Federation of College Democrats. “College campuses are our territory and we plan on doing everything possible to make victory a reality next year.”

Participation from all College Democrats chapters across the state is encouraged. Those who attend will have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions on a variety of issues, including: crafting a message, membership recruitment, fundraising, and campus activities.

TFCD Statement on the Republican Culture of Corruption

NASHVILLE – The American people are faced with the growing problem of Republican corruption that extends from the local levels of government to its highest levels inWashington, D.C., with the corruption of national scandals even reaching into Tennessee.

Karl Rove, widely known as the brain of Bush’s political career, has found himself in the public eye in recent months. Rove’s scrutiny surrounds his involvement in the leaking of the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Plame is the wife of formerAmbassador Joseph Wilson, an outspoken critic of Bush’s preemptive strategies in Iraq.

“People are beginning to realize that in the time Karl Rove has spent controlling President Bush’s every move, he has neglected to ensure that his own actions are as picture perfect,” said Alex Youn, Executive Vice President of the Tennessee Federation of College Democrats. “What those within the White House have done to Valerie Plame and Joseph Wilson does not at all fit under their banner of compassionate conservatism –it flies in the face of it.”

Now there are allegations concerning Bill Frist’s dumping of millions of shares of HCA stock from his blind trust. Just days following Frist’s sell-off, HCA, a family company still run by Frist’s brother, reported disappointing earnings and the stock dropped 15 percent. A formal investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commisssion is now underway.

“This behavior is unnacceptable to the peope of Tennessee,” said Youn. “We deserve better leadership from our senators in Tennessee. We deserve much better than Frist is showing our state with his committment to personal gain and corporate interests.”

More disturbing are the circumstances surrounding Tom DeLay’s use of PAC money to influence Texas State House seats. Delay was indicted by a Texas grand jury on criminal conspiracy charges. A week later DeLay was indicted again by a different grand jury on a new charge of money laundering. Two of the three candidates seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Tennessee next year, Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary, received substantial campaign contributions from PACs controlled by DeLay.

“Now is the time for these candidates to return the tainted campaign contributions they have received from DeLay,” said Youn. “If they don’t, the link between these Republican candidates and DeLay should make Tennesseans think twice about voting for any Republican in next year’s elections.”
